Horse therapy—also called equine therapy or equine-assisted therapy—helps children and youth build emotional strength, confidence, and social skills through hands-on experiences with horses. At West Coast Centre for Learning, our Equine Facilitated Wellness (EFW) program in Surrey and Langley, BC, creates a safe and supportive environment where neurodivergent kids ages 8-19 can thrive.

Whether your child faces challenges with Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, anxiety, developmental delays, or learning differences, our therapeutic horse program offers a unique path to growth. Furthermore, participants develop essential life skills while experiencing the calming, transformative power of equine therapy. As a result, children gain confidence through structured interactions with horses in this completely judgment-free environment.

How Horse Therapy Sessions Work

Guided Activities with Horses

During each equine therapy session, participants actively engage in specifically designed exercises alongside one or more horses. Meanwhile, our skilled horse therapy coach provides expert guidance throughout the process. The coach carefully observes non-verbal communication between horse and participant, then interprets these meaningful interactions to guide each learner's journey.

Hands-On Learning

Horse therapy sessions feature hands-on activities that include grooming, walking, and occasionally riding the horses. Additionally, these equine-assisted therapy sessions use proven experiential learning techniques. For example, participants engage in role-playing, role-reversal, and mirroring exercises. As a result, children and youth can safely explore their emotions and behaviors in this supportive environment. Furthermore, each activity helps foster deeper self-understanding while improving personal interactions.

Reflection and Integration

After completing the activities, the coach discusses the session with each participant. This reflection process helps them share insights and plan effective next steps. Consequently, participants leave each therapeutic horse session with new tools for emotional growth and social development.

Benefits of Horse Therapy and Equine-Assisted Learning

Participants in horse therapy and equine therapy programs experience significant benefits across various aspects of their lives. For instance, these therapeutic horse programs enhance self-esteem, improve communication skills, and increase self-awareness. Moreover, participants gain greater relaxation and empowerment through regular sessions.

How Horses Provide Therapeutic Feedback

Additionally, horses provide honest and immediate feedback on emotional states and behavior because they are highly perceptive animals. This feedback proves invaluable since it remains completely unbiased and non-judgmental. As a result, participants receive a unique perspective on their interactions and emotional expressions that humans cannot provide.

Equine Therapy for Neurodivergent Children and Youth

Equine-assisted therapy serves as a valuable neuroaffirming practice for individuals with various mental health conditions and developmental disorders. Specifically, horse therapy benefits those with Autism Spectrum Disorders by enhancing communication and social skills. Meanwhile, individuals with ADHD often notice improvements in focus and self-control through these programs.

Mental Health Benefits of Horse Therapy

Furthermore, equine therapy offers relief for those experiencing anxiety and depression. Similarly, it helps children and youth with behavioral issues, learning disabilities, and developmental delays. Additionally, these therapeutic horse sessions foster emotional awareness and impulse control.
