What Is the Summer Slide?
The “summer slide” isn’t a new dance move. It’s what educators call the learning loss many students experience over summer break. Without regular practice, academic skills in reading, writing, and math often fade—sometimes setting kids back by months. For neurodiverse learners, the impact can be even greater. But the good news? It’s completely preventable.
Why Summer Learning Matters
At West Coast Centre for Learning, our summer programs are designed to stop learning loss in its tracks—while also helping kids catch up, build confidence, and move ahead. Our programs offer more than tutoring. They provide brain-based, evidence-supported strategies that strengthen foundational skills in reading, memory, focus, and executive function. Best of all, they’re personalized to meet each child where they are.
Summer also gives students the space to catch up without the daily pressures of school. With more time and less stress, kids can focus on what they really need—whether it’s reading fluency, math support, working memory, or task management. That’s why we offer programs like Fast ForWord and ClearFluency to build core literacy and language skills, along with Cogmed Working Memory Training to support focus, attention, and learning capacity.
Of course, preventing the summer slide is just part of the picture. We also support academic growth and enrichment. Programs like Executive Function Coaching help students learn how to plan, prioritize, and manage tasks—skills that lead to lasting success both in and out of the classroom.
Build a Competitive Edge
Looking to give your child a competitive edge? Our brain-training approach strengthens critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and academic resilience. These tools don’t just help kids survive school—they help them shine.
And when students see their own progress, confidence naturally follows. At WCCL, we believe success builds upon success. The skills they develop during our summer programs lay the foundation for stronger academic performance in the fall—and beyond.
Programs That Support Every Learner
This summer, WCCL offers a variety of learning programs that actively support different types of learners:
- Fast ForWord for language and reading processing.
- ClearFluency for oral reading practice with real-time feedback.
- Cogmed Working Memory Training to improve focus and attention.
- Executive Function Coaching to strengthen organization, time management, and emotional regulation.
- The Listening Program (TLP), a music-based intervention that supports auditory processing, attention, communication, and emotional regulation.
Each program focuses on building real skills with tools that adapt to the learner. In addition, our team works directly with each student to ensure they feel supported, capable, and motivated to grow.
